All about the best stat in baseball, on my podcast

Since the year 2000, nobody has hit more home runs in Major League Baseball (MLB) than New York Yankees' right fielder Aaron Judge. The 6-foot-7, 280 pound player with the 27 inch biceps was drafted by his hometown team in 2013 and made his MLB debut on August 13th, 2016 and has not slowed down since.

Judge hit 52 home runs in 2017 to win his first American League (AL) Rookie of the Year award and finished second in AL Most Valuable Player voting behind Mike Trout. While he was runner-up for the 2017 AL MVP, it is likely that this year's winner will reside within New York's locker room considering Judge's historic home run pace of 49 homers in the second half of the 2018 season.

Judge, who at age 27 is currently as tall as NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal and as heavy as former NFL linebacker Bill Romanowski, has an entire career to grow into his frame and could become one of MLB's most legendary power hitters if he finds a way to maintain his mechanics and not break down physically.

What is a dinger and why does it matter in baseball

A dinger is a slang term for a home run. The MLB defines it as:

"A home run [is] a fair ball hit so that it goes clear out of the playing field and through the imaginary extended vertical plane of the outer fence of the baseball field, as determined by the Commissioner."

However, if you ask your average baseball fan, they will tell you that a dinger is just when the ball gets blasted very far into the stands.

Who hit the most home runs in 2016

The player who hit the most home runs in 2016 was American League's Designated Hitter, Nelson Cruz of the Seattle Mariners.

Cruz only needed 146 games to hit his 44 dingers last year. He had six multi-home run games throughout the season and was named to his second consecutive All-Star game. The Cuban born outfielder tacked on a few postseason dingers to his 2016 total.

How does someone hit a dinger and what are the benefits

For a dinger to happen, a batter has to hit the ball over the wall of the outfield. Doing so helps them win games and gets fans excited about watching future games.

The total benefits vary from player to player such as:

  • Getting on base and scoring runs

  • Being able to knock in an RBI (Runs batted in)

  • Making money for hitting one out of the park

What are some of the other top players in terms of dingers hit

Players who have hit the most dingers in history are:

  • Babe Ruth at 714

  • Hank Aaron at 755

  • Alex Rodriguez with 696

  • Barry Bonds with 762

Why do people love watching home runs so much

The MLB has been a home run derby since the year 2000. During this time, people have enjoyed watching talented baseball players hit these balls very far into the stands.

People enjoy watching home runs because they are exciting and unpredictable, while also being impressive to watch in person or on TV. People also love seeing a long ball when their favorite team is down by a couple runs.

Why do players hit so many dingers now compared to other eras

Players are hitting more dingers than ever before because the MLB has allowed bat manufacturers to create bats with larger barrel diameters. A larger barrel means the player is able to swing faster, generating more power and allowing them to connect with baseballs more easily.

Since players are hitting more dingers than ever before, it is likely that this trend will continue into the future. The only thing that could slow down this pace is if batters start to swing harder and connect with the ball less, causing them to lose power in their swings.
